![]() Backup and Restore- 10/21/2008 Online backup software is designed to backup and restore computer data files using the internet as a medium. There are many different types of backups, including online backup, local area network backup, and backup to storage media such as external hard drives, and/or CDs and DVDs - among others. The most valuable result of any of these backup strategies is the restore capability that they provide in a time of need. In order to properly backup and restore data, each system has its own requirements. Online backup, for instance, requires an internet connection and an offsite server to store data on. Local area network backup simply requires that data be moved from point A to point B within the same secure network. Backups that are sent to storage devices or disks can be done within the same machine that the data reside on - using on-board CD or DVD burning software. Whatever method you employ to backup your data, it is highly suggested that you verify that the backups were done correctly. In many cases, data that have been saved to any media are not checked for accuracy until after a disaster has occurred. By then, of course, it is too late to rerun the backups.
